Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic review

Disney on Ice Collage

I mentioned earlier today on Facebook that my family and I were headed to Disney on Ice at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown today.  What a fantastic show!  Full disclosure: I’ve wanted to see a Disney on Ice show since I was a kid, so this had a lot to live up to.  Mickey and the gang were joined by characters from 18 favorite Disney stories to present a pretty spectacular performance.

About the show:

The costumes, lighting, sets, and special effects were all what you’d expect from Disney, and the skating was impressive as well.  There was a huge cast, and to my amateur eye, they all did a great job (especially considering that many of them were skating with bulky costumes and oversized head coverings!).  Tons of spins, lifts, and even a back flip from the skaters made watching a lot of fun.

Characters featured in the 100 Years of Magic show included the characters from Aladdin, Lion King, Mulan, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, and the “It’s a Small World” ride.  There were some really unique costumes, like the 2-person Bruce the Shark costume in the Nemo scene, and the giant Mushu Chinese dragon in the Mulan part.  There were also some pretty cool large pieces, like the giant whale in Pinocchio, and three huge floats for It’s a Small World.

The finale for the first act was probably my favorite part.  They transformed the castle backdrop to look like the Small World ride from Disney World, then all the various performers came out dressed in costumes from different countries.  When we thought things were finished, the lights went out, and everything lit up, just like it does at Disney World during the light parade at night!

All four kids–my 8.5-year-old daughter, and sons ages 3, 5, and almost 7–really enjoyed the show.  They each spotted some favorite characters and found something special to really enjoy.  I wasn’t sure if it would be too “girly” for the boys (I was hoping it wouldn’t be all princesses!), but the boys all had a great time!  The show lasted two hours, including intermission, and I’d recommend it most for ages 3 and up…my little guy who just turned 3 was about at the end of his attention span when it ended, and I saw some younger kids who hit the wall part way through the second half.

About the venue:

We’ve been to shows in downtown Cleveland, but had never been to the Covelli Centre in Youngstown before.  It’s a smaller arena, but this works to its advantage.  All the seats were close enough to have a good view, parking was convenient, and traffic coming in and going out weren’t bad either.  Parking for this event at the Covelli Centre lot was $10, but I preferred that to maneuvering four kids through downtown traffic like we usually have to do in Cleveland.  The drives to Cleveland and Youngstown are within about 10 minutes’ difference for me, so I’d definitely consider attending another event at the Covelli Centre in the future.

Thinking about going?

The 100 Years of Magic show plays in Youngstown through tomorrow (12/15), with shows at 1:00 and 5:00 pm.

A different Disney on Ice show called “Let’s Celebrate” will be coming to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland from January 10-19.  You can find more information about those performances, along with a discount code and a chance to win FREE tickets by clicking HERE. (Hurry–contest ends 12/16!)
