Cookie Decorating

Here’s a simple and fun idea if you’re on room parent duty for your kids’ Valentine’s Day party.  I did this last year for my son’s Kindergarten class, and it was a big hit!  Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 tubs of white icing
  • food coloring
  • mini cupcake liners
  • several different colors of sprinkles
  • plastic knives or spoons for spreading the icing
  • 1 heart-shaped sugar cookie per student

Use the food coloring to color 1/2 of the icing pink.  Use a small cookie scoop to portion out individual servings of the icing into the mini cupcake liners.  Put a small portion of the sprinkles in cupcake liners too.  This makes them easy to pass out during the class party.  I was able to fit all my icings and sprinkles in a 9×13 pan, which made them easy to transport to school.

This project doubled as both a craft and snack, and the kids loved being able to choose their own icing and sprinkle colors (not to mention licking the spoon!)

We have two delicious recipes for cut-out sugar cookies: check out Megan’s Sour Cream Sugar Cookies and Sara’s Favorite Cut-Out Cookies.  I recommend you roll the cookies fairly thick so they’re less likely to break as the kids work their magic!

I love this! I’m pretty sure I could entertain even a crowd of snobbish adults with cookie decorating. Never thought of it as a party, though.

this is an awesome idea, gonna have to try it!
  6. I love this idea! I think it would be really fun to have kids decorate them, then swap them just like they would with valentines cards (as long as they had clean hands, i wouldn’t want them swapping germs too). Honestly i think this would work well with adults too.
    • Haha–after watching the Kindergarteners do this last year at their class party, it’s probably for the best they all just ate their own ;) They had a fantastic time making them, but they definitely would have been swapping germs! It might be fun to let older kids use icing tips and decorating bags to make fancy ones at a party at home though–they probably would have a little more self-restraint with licking their fingers!
