As winter starts to wind down, it’s a great time to think about summer vacation plans.  Planning ahead can help you get the best deals on transportation, lodging, and more.

It’s amazing how much travel expenses can vary.  You can do a camping long weekend getaway for less than $100, or any number of fabulous week-long vacations in the thousands (and anywhere in between).  As you start to plan your vacation, first look at what your budget should be.  A vacation should be a relaxing break from your everyday routine, and it’s not relaxing to put yourself in financial stress!  There are plenty of fun things to do on a smaller budget, perhaps allowing you to up for something bigger another year.

There are lots of possible money-saving tradeoffs to consider: finding a place where you can prepare some of your own meals rather than eating out, choosing a less-expensive place to stay because you’ll be spending most of your time away from your room, taking a less-convenient flight to save on airfare…the list goes on.

Bottom line: you can make memories and enjoy some time away from home without breaking the bank.  Throughout the coming week, we’ll be sharing some updated Travel on a Shoestring posts with more ideas about how to cut your travel budget so you can get the most bang for your buck on vacation.  We’d love to hear your favorite vacation money-saving tips to add to the list. Looking forward to seeing what you share in the comments or on Facebook!
